Lydia Hewitt Hobbs of North Stonington died at home Sunday, January 19, 2003, following a brief illness. She was 85.
She was born August 9,. 1917 in New Haven,. Conn,. the daughter of the late Brower and Antoinette Butler Hewitt She was a graduate ofMrs. Day's School in New Haven.
During World War n she served in the American Red Cross in England where she met her husband Sgt. Carl H. Hobbs of Arlington. K y , a soldier with the American forces. There were married in Birmingham England in 1944 .
She later worked in New Haven as the manager of the Junior League Gift Shop and of the YaleNew Haven Hospital Gift Shop and assistant manager of the book department ofthe Yale Co-op.After moving to North Stonington in 1964,. she served as the coordinator of volunteers at theMystic Seaport.
Mrs. Hobbs served two terms as president of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the State of Connecticut She was a cofounder of the North Stonington Land Use Association.
She served as chair of the Stonington Tricentennial Board of Trustees also serving on its ScholarshipCommittee. She was an officer of the North Stonington Garden Club, the North StoningtonCitizens Land Alliance,. and the Walter Palmer Society and a member of the New Haven JuniorLeague and the North Stonington Historical Society .
She twice was elected a Justice of the Peace in North Stonington and was an active participated incivic affairs. She was the managing partner of Oldhaven Associates, a family partnership,. fromits establishment until November 2002.
She was preceded in death by her parents. a brother, and a sister. She is survived by a sister,Cornelia Hewitt FiUS, of Andover, Massachusetts; a son. Carl H. Hobbs III, of Gloucester Point,Va. a granddaughter. Catherine E. Hobbs. of Scottsville. Va. and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be heJd in the North Stonington Congregational Church at 12:30 p.m.,Saturday, January 25,2003. Private burial will precede the service in the Hewitt family cemetery.
