Obituary

SALEM- Virginia M. Lewis, 88, of Salem, died Thursday evening, January 16, 2003 at the Salem Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Marblehead on July 8, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Alfred E. and A. Frances (Regan) Lewis.

She attended Girls Latin School in Boston, graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk, Virginia, attended the College of William and Mary and graduated from Wellesley College summa cum laude with a degree in education in 1940.

Ms. Lewis retired as a professor from the English Department of Wellesley College, where she taught for many years.

A resident of Salem for over 50 years, Ms. Lewis was past president of the Women's Republican Club of Salem, Chairperson of the Republican City Committee, Salem, and was vice president of the North Shore Wellesley Club.

She is survived by two cousins, Marjorie (Lake) Lyons of Peabody and Debra A. Knight of Methuen,

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at 11:30 AM at the Beechwood Cemetery, in the Centerville section of Barnstable. DIRECTIONS TO CEMETERY FROM THE NORTH SHORE AREA. Take Route 128 South (route 95 South, to Route 93North) or take the Southeast Expressway; To Route 3 South in Braintree. Continue on Route 3 and cross the Sagamore Bridge onto Cape Cod, and Route 6. Continue on Route 6 to Exit #5. (Marston Mills) At the end of the ramp, go straight (not right). Take the first right onto Old Stage Road, continue to stop sign and take a left (staying on Old Stage Road). When you come to a Mobile Station on the right, cemetery is on the left.
