Robert Oliver Beckwith, age 72, of Preston, passed away Thursday at his home after a brief illness.
Bob was born in Waterford on January 24, 1935 the son of Archer E. and Phoebe M. (Armstrong) Beckwith. He was a 1953 graduate of Fitch Senior High School and then served in the U.S. Navy.
He enjoyed a long career as a Master Welder, starting at Electric Boat in 1957, before accepting positions with the Cuno Company and the Chicago Bridge Company. Also known as an accomplished mirror welder, he returned to Electric Boat in 1974 where he was employed until his retirement in 1996.
He is survived by his wife, Ann (Watrous) Beckwith; his three children, Robert E. Beckwith of Preston, Wayne A. Beckwith of Canterbury, and Lynne Hasuly of East Haddam; a sister, Dorothy Beckwith of Norwich, and 2 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Theodore “Ted” Beckwith.
Bob’s family will greet relatives and friends at the Ledyard Assembly of God Church, Colonel Ledyard Highway, Ledyard on Thursday from 1pm until 1:45pm, followed by a service at 2pm. Burial will be in the family plot at Lambtown Cemetery.
