Martha Schunk, 92, a resident of St. Francis Home died January 17, 2003 in her residence after a lengthy illness. She was born Nussbach, Germany, on September 11, 1910, the daughter of Karl and Julianna (Gauer) Schwarz.
She came to the United States at the age of 17 and resided in Sayville Long Island, New York for more than 62 years. In May 2001 she moved to Laconia to be near her daughter, Dorothy.
During her time in Sayville, she was very active at St. John Lutheran Church. She also was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and the Loan Cabinet the Sick in New York. Mrs. Schunk was a member of the Steuben Society of America and also the Senior Citizens of Sayville.
Family members include her husband of 69 years, Otto Schunk of Laconia; two daughters, Julianna Helen Crawford and her husband Richard of Sayville NY, and Dorothy Steuer and her husband Andrew of Laconia; five grandchildren, Kenneth A. Steuer, PhD of Bloomington IN, Timothy J. Steuer of Laconia, Christopher R. Crawford of Sayville NY, Julianna Steuer Nelson of Gilford and David J. Crawford of Sayville NY; and ten great grandchildren.
Calling hours were in the Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St., Laconia on Monday from 6 to 8 PM and also on Tuesday at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2238 Parade Rd., Laconia from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. A funeral service was held in the Church at 11 AM. Rev. Rob Robb, Pastor of the church and Rev. Harry Schenkel, Pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Sayville NY will officiated. Spring burial will be in Union Cemetery, Laconia. David L. Furber is the funeral director.
