FAIRHAVEN — Edith Hersey (Mitchell) Hunt, age 97 years, was born on January 3, 1910 in New Bedford to Edith (Turner) and Charles Mitchell.
She graduated from Rogers School and Fairhaven High School. She then attended Connecticut College for Women for two years and subsequently received her BA degree from Cornell University. In 1933, she received her MS degree in social work from Columbia University and then joined Travelers' Aid Society in Boston. She continued serving at Travelers' Aid throughout her working career, retiring as director in 1974.
Edith was married to Harold Price of Medford in 1938 until his death in 1952. Ten years later she married Nathaniel Hunt of Boston, who predeceased her in 1992.
An active member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Fairhaven, she served for many years on the Board of Directors of the former Bradford Russell Home in Fairhaven.
In 1992, Edith retired to Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth and in 2000 moved to Our Lady's Haven, where she died on December 8, 2007.
Survived by two nephews, Charles McKim Mitchell of Fairhaven and Douglas J. Mitchell of Madison, WI, and a niece, Anne M. Murcek of Lewisburg, PA and nine great-nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late C. Bradford Mitchell and Raymond McK. Mitchell.
A celebration of Life service will be held at the Unitarian Memorial Church in Fairhaven on Saturday, December 22, at 11 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Oglala Lakota College, Piya Wiconi, P.O. Box 490, Kyle, SD 57752. Arrangements are with the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford.
