Antonio "Tony" Sousa Baptista, 58, of New Bedford died Thursday January 16, 2003 at home after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Joao and Isabel (Sousa) Baptista.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, he lived in Brava for many years before moving to New Bedford 12 years ago.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mr. Baptista was formerly employed by Eastern Fisheries in New Bedford.
Survivors include a brother, Eduardo S. "Dada" Baptista and his wife Nancy of New Bedford; 2 sisters, Diondina Lopes and her husband Jose, and Isabel Drisman and her husband Henk, all of Holland; 2 aunts, Laurinda Rosa of Plymouth and Eliza Martins of Cumberland, RI; his cousin who raised him, Amelia Sanchs of Pawtucket, RI; his cousin who was raised like his sister, Dilia Tavares of Praia, Cape Verde; his brother's mother-in-law, Regina Fernandes and her children, Maria F. Vasconcelos and Joe Fernandes, with whom he resided; 6 nieces and nephews; and many cousins. He was the brother of the late Bertalina Tavares.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordSaturday January 18, 2003 at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Friday January 17, 2003 from 5-9 PM. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
