Obituary

Herbert L. "Herb" Snyder, 87, of Tifton died Sunday, December 16, 2007, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2007, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Rev. Jimmy Albritton and Dr. Danny V. Ray, Hospice of Tiftarea Chaplain will officiate with burial to follow in Tift Memorial Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Tifton Police Department and the Tift County Sheriff's Office. The family will receive friends on Monday, December 17, 2007, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. The family will also receive guests and friends at 7 Summit Lane in Tifton.

Mr. Snyder was born on October 7, 1920 in Washington County and was the son of Cleveland Snyder and Annie Osborne Snyder, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Woodrow Snyder; two sisters, Mattie Mae Brantley and Polly Broome; and a 7-year-old step granddaughter, Aimee Grace.

Mr. Snyder served with the U. S. 8th Air Force during World War II for three years, serving most of that time in England. He won the World War II Victory Medal, the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the AR 600-68 Distinguished Unit Badge. After returning home, he worked for J. P. Stevens in Baldwin County and, in 1962, relocated to Tifton to J. P. Stevens as a supervisor. He retired from there and worked for the Tift County Sheriff's Department for 26 years. He retired from there as a lieutenant in 1992. He was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Snyder is survived by his wife, Lucille M. Snyder of Tifton; three sons and daughters-in-law, James C. "Jim" and JoAnn Snyder of Tifton, Eugene and Denise Snyder of Cordele and Terry and Brenda Snyder of Turner County; two step-sons and their spouses, Joseph and Tanya Sanders of Pine Mountain and John Lowary of LaGrange; four daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Dan Shealy of Winterville, Christine and Jimmy Albritton of Moultrie, Joanne and Tom Burton of Crawford and Mary Nell and Steve Greer of Tifton; one step-daughter, Callie Thornton of Hogansville; four sisters, Ruby Crowe of Milledgeville, Lois Payne of Milledgeville, Ruth Roberson of Gordon and Alma Smallwood of Gordon; 16 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Hospice of Tiftarea.
