WORCESTER-J. Russell Hemenway, 94, of Worcester died Monday, December 10th in the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center. His wife of 61 years, Ann E. (Gagan) Hemenway died in 2001. He leaves 2 sons, Stephen I. Hemenway of Holland, MI and John J. and his wife Ruth Hemenway of Jefferson; 3 daughters, Sister Mary Ann Hemenway, SSJ of Shrewsbury, Jane and her husband Stetson R. Hall of Osterville, and Clare T. Hemenway of Wausau, WI; a sister, Virginia I. Varney of Worcester; and 3 grandchildren, Gregory Hall and James and Christine Petrone.
Mr. Hemenway was born in Worcester, the son of Julius J. and Sarah T. (Buckley) Hemenway. He was a graduate of Commerce High School and a 1935 graduate of WPI. Mr. Hemenway was employed by Leland-Gifford Company as an engineer for 33 years and at Jamesbury Corporation for 6 years until his retirement in 1978. He was an active member of St. Peter’s Church, the Holy Name Society and the Worcester Tech Old Timers. Family and friends will remember his gentleness, kindness and sense of humor.
The Mass is Saturday, December 15th at 10:00 AM in the Chapel at Notre Dame du Lac Assisted Living, 555 Plantation Street. Burial will be private in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, December 14th from 4:00 until 7:00 PM in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Notre Dame Long Term Care Activities Program, 559 Plantation Street, Worcester, MA 01605.
