
John J. Provasoli, Sr., age 93, of Andover, died Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at his home following a brave battle with cancer. He was born on May 24, 1914 in Milford, New Hampshire, beloved son of the late Agostino and Ambrogina (Puricelli) Provasoli. He worked for Essex Bituminous of Peabody and Andover for more than 40 years and was a 51 years member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 4.
Mr. Provasoli served during WWII in the Coast Guard, entering at Boston, Massachusetts, on December 26, 1941 and receiving his honorable discharge from Boston on September 21, 1945. During his military career, John earned the rank of Motor Machinist Mate, Second Class.
He was a very active member of St. Augustine Church of Andover and was hospitality minister for over forty years at St. Joseph Church in Ballardvale. In 1999, John and his wife Elizabeth became affiliated members in the Order of St. Augustine. He was active in the American Legion, Post # 8 for many years and was recognized for his contributions as a member of the honor guard. He was an honorary member of the Andover 1078 Knights of Columbus.
Following his retirement, John enjoyed traveling and spending much quality time with his beloved family. John will be always remembered as a kind and generous man who would take great pleasure in helping a neighbor and especially sharing vegetables from his bountiful garden.
Besides his beloved wife, Elizabeth of more than 63 years, he will be sorely missed by two sons and two daughters-in-law; John J., Jr., and his wife Janet Provasoli of Salem, New Hampshire and Joseph R. Provasoli and his wife Betty Dayyo of Phoenix, Arizona, two daughter and one son-in-law; Debra P. and her husband Todd D. Merrill of Andover and Cheryl A. Provasoli of Bradford, two granddaughters; Elizabeth A. Provasoli and her fiancée, Daniel DiBella of Salem, New Hampshire and Emily N. Traynor of Bradford, one brother; Charles M. Provasoli of Deland, Florida and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Joseph Church, Ballardvale, Monday December 10, 2007, at 10 AM. Many relatives and friends attended. Calling hours were held in the Burke-Magliozzi, 390 North Main Street, Andover, Sunday, December 9, 2007, from 2 to 5 PM. Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover.
