Funeral from the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Friday at 8 am. Funeral Mass in St. Edward Church at 9 am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Obituary Information
Mr. Sabaitis died Tuesday at the New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton after a lengthy illness. He was born in Brockton, the son of the late Michael and Benedicta (Stoskus) Sabaitis. He attended Brockton Schools and was a graduate of Brockton High School Class of 1937 where he was a track star in hurdles and relay.
During WW II as a member of the US Army First Infantry Division he saw action in every major battle from Africa, Sicily, Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, through Czechoslovakia. He received the Bronze Star for his heroism. He had competed internationally in US Army track events. After the war he returned to the Brockton area and worked in the laboratory at Proctor and Gamble for 37 years retiring in 1984. He enjoyed athletics both as a participant and spectator for his lifetime. He played semi professional football and baseball in the 1940’s for local teams, was a member of the Senior Bowling League at Westgate Lanes, a member of DW Field Golf Course, former member of the Young Men’s Lithuanian Association for which he played sports and sang in the Men’s Glee Club, he was a longtime communicant of St. Edward Church, a member of the American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars and Society of the First Division.
In addition to his wife of 55 years Alice C. Sabaitis, he is survived by a daughter Judge Catherine P. Sabaitis, First Justice of Plymouth County Probate and Family Court, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the brother of the late Ann Remedis and Aldona Astore
