LOWELL--Charles S. Sharkey Jr., 77 years old, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died Monday December 3, in Lowell. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth A. (Carroll) Sharkey, who died in February of 1999.
Born in Lowell on January 7, 1930, he was a son of the late Charles S. and Helen (Freeman) Sharkey. Mr. Sharkey was raised in the Sacred Heart Parish, Salutatorian of his Lowell High School Class and was a graduate of Boston University.
Mr. Sharkey served in the Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. Following his time in the Army, he was a sales analyst for Courier Citizen Corporation, (later know as Uniform Printing) for the next three decades. More recently, he worked for the Lowell Registry of Deeds. After retirement, Mr. Sharkey became a student of languages learning greetings, common expressions and conversational basics in Spanish, Krio, Swahili, Portuguese, Vietnamese and Khmer.
Mr. Sharkey was a resident of the Lowell Highlands and a member of Saint Margaret’s Parish for the past 37 years.
He is survived by two daughters: Elizabeth Quinn, and her husband Stephen, of Seabrook, NH; and Linda Sharkey, and her wife Sarah Pease, of Northampton; a brother: Joseph A. Sharkey, and his wife Jane, of Kennebunk, ME; three sisters: Ruth Greeley, and her husband Richard, of State College, PA; Sr. Gladys Sharkey, OSF, of St. Petersburg, FL, and Marie B. Sharkey of Berlin, NY; three grandchildren: Brian, Patrick and Jimmy Quinn, all of Seabrook, NH, as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
He was the father of the late Francis J. Sharkey, brother of the late James and Leo Sharkey and Helen (Sharkey) Charron.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM on Thursday, December 6th at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 48). His Funeral Mass to be offered at 11 AM on Friday, December 7th at ST.
