George Douglas “Doug” Gowdy a Needham resident for over 40 years died on Sunday, November 25th at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. He was 67 years old. Born in Medford, Doug was a graduate of Winchester High School Class of 1958 and Tufts University School of Engineering Class of 1963. A dedicated employee of the former Stone and Webster Engineering Corp. of Boston for 33 years, Doug then worker for G.E in Schenectady, NY; Arkwright Technical Service in Waltham and F.M Global in Norwood. He retired from F.M. Global in September of 2006. Doug was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). An sports enthusiast, he enjoyed all sports. Doug loved to garden, and bird watch and was an accomplished woodworker. An avid fly fisherman, he enjoyed his annual salmon fishing trip and was a board member of the Miramichi Renous Club in Blackville, New Brunswick, Canada. Doug was also a former board member and Vice President of the Boston Skating Club. The loving husband for 43 years of Jane Wilson (Potter) Gowdy, he was the dear son of Marion E. (Youngken) Gowdy of Winchester and the late George H. Gowdy. Son in law of the late Constance D. and Dr. Theodore A Potter of West Newton and Kearsarge NH, he was the devoted father of Christian Douglas Gowdy and his wife Holly of Walpole, NH, Gretchen Lapham and her husband Henry G. Lapham Jr. of Medfield and Duncan Wilkinson Gowdy and his wife Elizabeth A. Siler of Greenfield MA. Brother of Constance Gowdy Smith and her husband John of Chelmsford and Robert E. Gowdy and his wife Cheryl of Scituate. Brother in law of Susan Potter Smith and her husband Frederick of West Wardsboro, VT. Cherished grandfather of George David and Edward Alexandre Gowdy of Walpole NH and Katharine Potter and Henry Douglas Lapham of Medfield. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and caring friends. A Memorial Service will be held at the Congregational Church of Needham, 1154 Great Plain Ave Needham on Saturday, December 1st at 3:00 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
