Obituary

Beatrice C. Myer, 94, passed away at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, November 21st.

Miss Myer was the daughter of the late Merritt R. Myer and Ruby Myer Roberts and stepdaughter of the late Roger F. Roberts with whom she resided for many years.

Miss Myer was a graduate of Gloucester High School and was a Sawyer Medal recipient. She attended secretarial school and subsequently worked for many years in the Gloucester school system, serving as secretary to the late Milton L. Fuller, principal of the former Central Grammar School. She also served in the U.S. Navy in 1943.

Miss Myer was active in the Girl Scouts for more than 75 years, receiving numerous honors and citations for her years of devoted service as a volunteer leader, trainer, and consultant. In her earlier years she was active in the Mariner Girl Scouts where she sailed on Irving Johnson’s ketch, Yankee and earned the nickname “Skipper.” She attended the Edith Macy School for Girl Scout Leadership Training in New York.
Later, she ran the Girl Scout’s Camp Pennacook in Rowley for several summers, developing the Wide Games book used by Scouts throughout the region for outdoor training. She especially enjoyed teaching scouts about camping, crafts, and nature studies. In honor of her lifelong volunteer work in scouting, the flagpole at the Girl Scout Friendship House in Gloucester was dedicated in her honor. She also received the Thanks and Thanks II badges, the highest awards given to adult leaders for outstanding service to the Girl Scouts.

Miss Myer was an avid birdwatcher and photographer, and provided over 1000 hours of volunteer service to the Massachusetts Audubon Society. She also enjoyed skiing, canoeing, sailing and traveling with friends throughout the United States and Canada.

She was a lifelong member of the West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church, donating funds for the installation of an elevator to allow those unable to climb stairs to attend church services.

Miss Myer is survived by her brother, R. Munroe Roberts, her nephew, Lee Roberts, and her niece Leslie Roberts Pope, wife of Dale Pope, all of Gloucester.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 1, at 9 a.m. at the West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church.
