Joe Hinman, age 68, of 251 Haley Road, Ledyard, died Thursday morning at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital after being stricken at his home.
Joe was born in Oswego, KS on February 22, 1934 the son of Treva Vance. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Oswego High School.
After receiving his education, Joe enlisted in the US Navy serving aboard the USS Harwood during the Korean Conflict.
He was employed as a Engineering Technical Aid at Electric Boat in Groton for over forty years, retiring in 1997.
He was a founding father of the Ledyard Boys Club League and was a member of the Charity & Relief Lodge of Masons in Mystic and the Preston VFW Post. An accomplished photographer, he was well known in the area as a wedding photography specialist.
Joe leaves his wife, Christine (Schramm) Hinman; his five sons, Bruce of Ill., Gary of WA, Mike of Gales Ferry, and Dewey and Darryl, both of Ledyard; a brother, Billy Vance of KS, 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandaughter.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic, on Sunday from 6pm-7:45pm, followed by a service at 8pm. The Rev. Merle E. Spring, pastor emeritus of the Old Mystic Baptist Church, will officiate.
Private burial with military honors will be at Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.
