Charles J. "Charlie" Mahoney, a 21 year resident of Saugus and former 30 year resident of Roslindale, died on Monday November 19, 2007 at The Chelsea Soldiers Home in Chelsea after an extended illness. He was 82 years old.
Charlie was born in Charlestown on February 19, 1925. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in Boston. He enlisted into the United States Army on May 13, 1943. He served during World War 2 and was discharged on November 7, 1945 with the rank of Tec-4. Charlie became a Boston Police Officer in 1947 and served in District 11 in Dorchester as a patrolman until 1970 when he joined the Hackney Division and served there until his retirement in 1990 after 43 years of service. He was a member of The Boston Police Patrolman's Association, The Emerald Society and The Charlestown Old Schoolboys Association.
Charlie is the beloved husband of 51 years to Joan G. (Downey) Mahoney. He is the devoted father of Mary Carroll and her husband Mark of Melrose, Joanmarie Rohracker of Seebrook, New Hampshire and Virginia Forrestall and her husband Paul of Everett. He is the loving "Pa" to 9 grandchildren. He is the beloved brother of James Mahoney, Margaret Driscoll and John Mahoney (Ret. B.P.D.) all of Charlestown, the late Mary Barone, Helena Dever, Daniel Mahoney and Francis Mahoney. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Charlie's Funeral will be held on Saturday November 24, 2007 at 8:45 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St. Melrose followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Margaret's Church, 431 Lincoln Avenue, Saugus at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours for Charlie will be on Friday November 23, 2007 from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will take place at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
