AUBURN-Margaret Anne (Beatty) Carberry passed away on Monday, November 19th at her home in Auburn. Earlier this month she happily and heartily celebrated her 87th birthday.
Born in Worcester on November 5th, 1920, Peg was the only surviving child of H. Ward Beatty and Marion Beatty, and she was truly beloved by them. After graduating from Becker College and working for a time with her father in his Dental Laboratory, she married Donald Edward Carberry, an officer in the U.S. Air Force, just after the Second World War and gave birth to two children, Don and Peggy. For more than forty years she made her home in West Tatnuck, and she worked at Memorial Hospital for some twenty years as an Emergency Ward clerk, before retiring to care for her mother. Peg was a truly unique individual. Right up until the day she died, she had a quick and clever wit, a tremendous sense of humor, and a deeply devoted love for her family. As a grandmother, she didn’t knit; she didn’t bake cookies—in truth, she would have been the first to tell you that she couldn’t cook—but she was a die-hard Boston sports fanatic, a lover of action movies, and reveled in her Irish heritage. Receiving the gift of an up-right piano at the age of 7, she kept it with her always and continued to play it year after year. Her favorite song to play was “Danny Boy.” In her youth, Margaret loved to swim in Brooks Pond in Spencer, and just this past summer, she donned a new bathing suit and swam in the pool at her home. When she lowered herself into the water, she said “Glory be to God!” Peg – or “Gram”, as she was affectionately known for more than 37 years – will be greatly missed by her son Donald and daughter Peggy, as well as by her daughter-in-law Gail, her cousin and best friend Ruth Knott, her grandchildren Donny, Colin, Catherine Erin, Alison, Laurel, Galen and Nolan, her many great-grandchildren, and especially her first great-grandson, Brendan, who very much enjoyed living with her in this, her last year.
The funeral is Friday, November 23rd, from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester, with a Mass at 11:00 A.M. in St. Peter’s Church, 931 Main Street, Worcester. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester. A visiting hour is from 9:30 until 10:30 A.M. Friday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Amy H. Carberry Scholarship Fund, c/o Quinsigamond Community College, 670 West Boylston Street, Worcester, MA 01606.
