LOWELL- James P. ‘Jim’ Flanagan, 92 years old, formerly of Chelmsford, died Friday evening, November 16th, at Saints Medical Center, Lowell. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Matthews) Flanagan, with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage on November 10, 2007.
He was born in Lowell, on July 31, 1915, a son of the late Edward and Mary (McGurn) Flanagan, and was a graduate of the Lowell School System.
Jim served in the United States Army in England, North Africa and Italy in Company C, of the 313th Medical Battalion, from March 3, 1942 until October 10, 1945. Upon his discharge, he was employed by the Tewksbury State Hospital and Solomon Mental Health Center, retiring in 1980.
He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church. He was a life member of the Lowell Lodge of Elks, Lodge # 87, and the Poor Clare Guild.
Surviving him besides his wife are two sons and daughters-in-law: James and Martha (Moore) Flanagan, of Herndon, VA; and Ted and Bonnie (Towle) Flanagan, of Chelmsford; a granddaughter: Kathy Flanagan, of Arlington, VA; a grandson: Kevin Flanagan, of Herndon, VA; two sisters-in-law: Jane Cryan, of Chelmsford; and Kay Matthews, of Hathorne; also many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late John, Francis, Edward and George Flanagan, and brother-in-law of the late Joseph Matthews, John Matthews, and Sister Theresa Matthews, GSNH.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Monday, November 19th at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38). His Funeral Mass to be offered at 11 AM on Tuesday, November 20th, at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery.
