SALEM - LCDR Dorothy H. Callahan, US Navy, Retired, age 80, died Thursday evening, November 15, 2007 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers following a lengthy illness.
Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late John & Annie (Gallagher) Callahan. Other than when she was in the Navy, she was a lifelong resident of Salem, and parishioner of the St. Thomas The Apostle Church.
She attended St. Margaret Hospital School of Nursing in Dorchester and worked as a registered nurse before entering the Navy in August of 1954.
She served as a Nursing Service Supervisor for over twenty years, retiring as a Lt. Commander on November 1, 1974. During her military career, in addition to various stateside assignments, she served in Japan, the Philippines and Italy.
Known for her quick wit and fun loving personality, she had a love for travel that she especially enjoyed with her sister Margaret. In her younger years, she enjoyed golf and won tournaments at the Wenham Country Club. A devoted fan of the Red Sox and Patriots, she also followed professional golf.
Dorothy is survived by 1 Brother, Arthur Callahan, Sr. & his wife Alice of Topsfield, nieces and nephews, Patricia Devoe, James Callahan Jr., Maureen Amenta, Debra Callahan, Donald Callahan, Linda Callahan, Arthur “Chuck” Callahan, Margaret Yonis, several cousins in the US and Ireland and several grand nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late James Callahan, Sr., John Callahan, Margaret Callahan, Joseph Callahan and Thomas Callahan.
Her funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at 10 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 AM at the St. Thomas The Apostle Church, Salem. Visiting hours are Monday, 4 to 7 PM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery, Salem.
