John W. Smith, 80, of North Attleboro for the past 10 years died on Sunday November 11, 2007 at the Golden Living Center/Pleasant Manor Nursing Home in Attleboro, he was the beloved husband of the late Helen L. (Fernandes) Smith who passed away on Feb. 14, 1995.
Born in Foxboro, MA on February 14, 1927 he was a son of the late Wilson and Ruth (Wolfe) Smith.
He grew up in Foxboro, was educated in Foxboro schools and was a graduate of Foxboro High School. He served in United States Army Air Corps during the end of WWII before being honorably discharged.
Mr. Smith was a Machinist having worked for over 30 years at Texas Instruments in Attleboro prior to retiring. He also maintained a second job as a School Bus Driver for the Wrentham Tri-County Area for over 20 years.
John had attended Grace Episcopal Church in North Attleboro and was an active member of the Attleboro VFW. He enjoyed bowling, golf and fishing and when younger he was stand out pitcher in the Attleboro Industrial Fast Pitch Softball League and received many trophies for his accomplishments.
Before moving to North Attleboro he had made his home in Plainville, Foxboro and Mansfield.
He is survived by his devoted children; Pamela J. Saathof of North Carolina, Gerald W. Smith of Attleboro, David J. Smith of Attleboro, William J. Smith of Cumberland, R.I. and Wayne A. Smith of Upton, he is also survived by his sister Diane of Florida and his 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Wednesday November 14th from 5-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday evening at 8:00 P.M. immediately following the visitation. Private burial will be held at a later date in the Spring Brook Cemetery, Mansfield.
In lieu of flowers John’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Pleasant Manor Nursing Home Activity Fund 195 Pleasant St. Attleboro, MA 02703.
