Obituary

Charles J. Butterfield, 91, of Windham, NH, died Saturday, November 3, 2007 at his home. He was born in Boston, MA on August 23, 1916, a son of George and Mary (Moriarty) Butterfield. Mr. Butterfield graduated from Woodbury High School in Salem, NH in 1935, where he lettered in basketball, football and baseball. He was a resident of Windham except for the few years that he was employed at Hamilton Standard Aircraft in Hartford, CT. Mr. Butterfield was the Postmaster in Windham, retiring after 32 years of service. He served as a special officer on the Windham Police Department as well as a volunteer firefighter. After retiring from the Postmaster position, Mr. Butterfield helped the town of Windham by heading up the animal control position. He was a communicant of St. Matthew’s Church in Windham and a member of the Cursillo community at St. Basil Salvatorian Center in Methuen, MA. Mr. Butterfield was a member of the Knights of Columbus and of the Windham Community Club. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed raising raising foxhounds and beagles. As a national foxhound and beagle judge, his services were sought after as he had earned a reputation for excellent judgment and fairness. During his lifetime achievement in the “hound world” he was able to breed and campaign two international champions.
Family members include three sons, Dennis C. Butterfield and Gary M. Butterfield both of Windham, and Timothy J. Butterfield DVM of Derry; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Mary V. (Boylan) Butterfield in 2002.
Calling hours were held at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry, on Wednesday, November 7th from 4 – 8pm. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Thursday at 10:00am in St. Matthew’s Church, 2 Searles Rd., Windham, with the burial following in the Cemetery on the Plain in Windham. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the CJB & MVB account, C/O Citizens Bank, for an in kind memorial gift to the Windham Conservation Commission, or to the Lazarus House, Attn.
