EAST BROOKFIELD: John S. Merola,82, of 104 Maple Way, died Wednesday, Oct.
31 at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester after a short illness.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Marion A. (Martino) Merola, a son John A.
Merola and a daughter Lisa A. Merola all of E.Brookfield, a brother Louis
Merola, two sisters Lillian C. Bolduc and Clara G. Merola all of Worcester,
and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a sister Mary C.
DelGreco.
John owned and operated The Lashaway Inn on Rte 9 in East Brookfield for the
past 36 years. Previously he was a tool and die designer for A & M Tool &
Die Co. in Southbridge for many years.
An accomplished professional musician, he played in many "Big Bands"
throughout the U.S. and Europe. He served his country during WWII in the
Army's 82nd. Airborne Division in Europe and fought in the "Battle of the
Bulge". He was a life member of the No.Brookfield VFW Post and Worcester
Musician's Union Local 143. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus
Council 118 in Spencer and St. John the Baptist Church.
Born in Worcester, he was the son of Nicholas and Lucia (Pomponio) Merola.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3 from the J.HENRI MORIN & SON
FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer with a Mass at 10a.m. in St. John the
Baptist Church, No.Brookfield Rd., E.Brookfield. Burial will follow with
Military Honors in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, Nov. 2 from
4 to 7p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to I.C.U. Education
Fund, St. Vincent Hospital, 123 Summer St., Worcester, Ma. 01608.
