Mrs. Betty Jean Young Sowell, 78, of Fitzgerald, died Wednesday, October 31, at Dorminy Medical Center.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, November 3, 2007 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dan Hayes and Rev. James Hubbard officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M., Friday evening at the funeral home.
Mrs. Sowell was born May 16, 1929 in Berrien County to the late Jesse and Alma Stephens Young. She lived in the community most of her life, graduating from Fitzgerald High School in 1946. While in school she worked at the Lee-Grant Hotel and was affectionately known as “The Red-Headed Waitress”. Mrs. Sowell was bookkeeper for the Fair Store and for Standard Supply Company, where she retired after thirty-two years. She was a member of the Fitzgerald Church Of The Nazarene and the Challenge Sunday School Class, holding the office of class secretary.
Mrs. Sowell is survived by her husband of over fifty years, William “Bill” Sowell of Fitzgerald; brothers, Jesse “Buddy” Young, Jr. and wife, Syble, of Haleyville, AL and Wayne Young and companion, Norma Reed of Fitzgerald. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, James David Young.
