Donald J. Harkins 75 years of Brockton died Thursday October 18, 2007 at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was the husband for 54 years of Evelyn M. (Gunberg) Harkins. Mr. Harkins was born in Brockton a son of the late Charles and Margaret (Tupper) Harkins. He remained a lifelong resident of the city and was a 1951 graduate of Brockton High School.
During the Korean Conflict he served as a sergeant in the US Army in Korea. He retired from the Plumbers Union Local 12 in Boston after many years. In his retirement he operated his own business DJ Harkins Plumbing Company in Brockton.
Mr. Harkins was a member of the Enterprise Club and Elks in Brockton and the American Legion in Abington. He was an avid reader and enjoyed golf. He loved making trips to Foxwoods. He will be remembered by all for his sense of humor.
In addition to his wife he is survived by four children Donna Harkins of Marion, Peggy Totten of E. Bridgewater, Tara Harkins of Somerville and Charles Harkins of Brockton. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Charles, Patricia, Dennis and Gerald Harkins.
A private family service will be held at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers donations in Don’s name may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc. 330 Congress Street, 5th Floor Boston, MA 02210.
