Obituary

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 for Saul Levy, 87, of Saugus formerly of Chelsea. Saul entered into eternal rest on September 24, 2007 at the Hammersmith House Nursing Care Facility in Saugus. He was the beloved husband of 51 years to Mary (Rogato) Levy.

Born in Boston on August 10, 1920, the son of the late Aaron & Lena (Fandberg) Levy, Saul was raised & educated in Chelsea, graduating from Chelsea High School in 1938. Upon his graduation, Saul attended the Massachusetts Trade School in Boston where he studied arc welding. From 1939 until 1943 he was employed by the Lawley & Son Co. of Dorchester where he operated various welding machines. He enlisted in the United States Army on December 21, 1943 in Boston, MA & served as a gunner squad leader in a 60 mm mortar crew. His duties included aiming the piece to place explosives upon enemy positions. He was responsible for the control & coordination of the mortar crews & the tactical deployment of the mortar. Saul served in the European Theatre of Operations which included service in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, & Central Europe for 18 months with the 329th Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, & the Victory Medal. He attained the rank of Sergeant & was honorably discharged at Ft. Devens, MA on January 1, 1946. Upon returning from military service, Saul began working for Tom’s Welding Service in Chelsea from 1946-1964. He then went to work for General Dynamics Shipyard in Quincy. Saul also worked part-time as a bartender at the Southern House Hotel in Boston & with his brother Monte Levy who owned the Bell-in-Hand Tavern in Boston. He was a life member of the Saugus VFW Post 2346 & the Disabled American Veterans. Saul was a dedicated & loving family man & enjoyed gardening & cooking, especially Italian specialties.

In addition to his beloved wife, Saul is survived by 3 children, Joanne McDonald & Al Patrizzi both of FL & Dennis Patrizzi of NH; 7 grandchildren; & 5 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at 11:00 AM in the Torf Funeral Chapel, 151 Washington Ave. (Cary Sq) CHELSEA. Burial will follow in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody. Memorial observance will be private. Those wishing to remember Saul may do so through memorial contributions to a charity of ones own choosing.
