Obituary

Curtis Eugene Warren, 88, died on September 18, 2007. He was born on October 6, 1918 in Manchester, New Hampshire to Eugene Maurice Warren and Winifred Hall Warren. Raised in New Bedford, MA and Cranston, RI, his 3 siblings, Eugene Clark Warren, Richard Warren, and Mary Warren, all predeceased him.

Curtis received a B.A. in Economics from Brown University in 1940.
During World War II, he served in the army in Biloxi, MI and Miami, FL.
He married Anne Craig of Mystic in 1944.

He received an M.A. in history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1947, after which he joined the faculty of New Hampton School, a preparatory school in New Hampshire.
After moving to the Mystic area in 1950, Curtis worked as an accountant for Standard Machinery and then the U.S. Submarine Base, before becoming a Connecticut State Bank Examiner in 1957. He remained in that position for 31 years, ending as Principal Bank Examiner.

Curtis was a member of the Masons, and past master of Coastal Lodge #57 in Stonington. He was also a member and officer of the Stonington Grange.

In his middle years, he enjoyed jogging and for several years he ran in the Tarzan Brown race and in the annual Cranberry Festival Race in Cape Cod, where he had a summer home.
Later his active longevity kept him cross country skiing past his 84th year. His interest in skiing began in the early 1960's, and he waited eagerly each winter for the snow to begin to fall so he could start waxing his skis. His ski trips included jaunts to Vermont with family, or solo day trips in the woods of his long-time friend, local Christmas tree farmer, Wilfred Caron.

Long after retirement, Curtis continued to do taxes for small businesses and the organizations of which he was a member. In addition, many relatives and friends are indebted to him for his devotion in sorting out their taxes for the IRS even during his final illness. His work was marked by impeccable honesty and untiring diligence, which inspired great trust and security. His unabated mental acuity in his 8th decade was enhanced by these finance activities, as well as his reading of historical works in both English and Spanish, which he had minored in. His love of Spanish led him to make friends in the Hispanic community in the state during his years on the road as a bank examiner.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anne Craig Warren, his son, Craig Warren, and his daughter Cynthia Warren. He also leaves behind his step-sister, Dorothy Feld, his sister- and brother-in-law Gus and Virginia Craig, three generations of nieces and nephews, and dear friends.

His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Sunday from 5-8pm. Curtis was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Mystic, where a Funeral Eucharist will be celebrated on Monday at 11am. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic.
