Arthur Goulart III, 64, of New Bedford died peacefully on Monday September 17, 2007 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a recurrence of lymphoma. He was the beloved husband of Rosemary Pereira-Goulart.
Born in Acushnet, the son of the late Anita (Robert) and Arthur Goulart II, he lived in New Bedford all his life.
Mr. Goulart served as a proud member of the New Bedford Police Department from 1977 until his retirement in 1998. He had also been an emergency medical technician in New Bedford for 13 years. He later worked at Heritage of Dartmouth.
Detective Goulart dedicated his career to promoting social justice, specializing in cases concerning the elderly and children.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 until 1964. He was a member of the Retired State, County, and Municipal Employees Association. He was passionate about the natural world and open spaces. An avid sports enthuisiast, he loved the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.
Survivors include his beloved wife; his beloved son, Christopher Anthony Goulart of Macomb, MI; his godparents, George and Terry Ladino of New Bedford; his uncle, Leo Robert of Toms River, NJ; his cousins, Tom and Anita Alferes of Fairhaven, Paul and Janet Robert of Acushnet, and Kathy Thomas of Deland, FL; his godson, Peter Furness of Milton; and his former wife, Ellen (Sprague) Goulart of New Bedford. He also leaves behind many dear friends.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 9 AM at St. John the Baptist Church. Burial with military honors will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
