Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Shaute, R.N., 82, of Olyphant, died Sunday morning.

Born Dec. 5, 1925, in Olyphant, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Rebar Shaute. A lifelong resident of Olyphant, she was a graduate of Holy Ghost Parochial School, Olyphant, and Olyphant High School, class of 1943. She received her registered nursing degree at the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as an orthopedic nurse at Mercy Hospital until her retirement and later worked part-time for the Professional Orthopedic Associates. She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Olyphant.

As a professional, Mary was a kind and compassionate nurse who cared for her patients with an empathy that came from her gentle, loving soul. As a beloved family member, she was a surrogate mother to all her younger cousins. Her home was the heart of the family, where everyone gathered to celebrate birthdays, holidays and to grieve when they lost one of their own. She had an extraordinary love for all animals, especially her beloved Siberian husky, Nikita.

Surviving are an aunt, Sophie McCormack, Peckville; a brother-in-law, Tony Picchio, Olyphant; and numerous cousins, including David Smith, who resided with her.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Picchio, in 1998.

The funeral will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Michael P. Glinsky Funeral Home, 129 Grant St., Olyphant, with Mass at 9:30 in St. Michael the Archangel Church. Interment, Holy Ghost Cemetery, Olyphant.
