John "Jack" Dowling, of 80 Hangman Hill Road, North Stonington, died Friday morning at his home fortified with the sacraments of the Holy Mother Church.

He was born in St. Louis, MO on December 8th, 1934 the son of James J. and Margaret (McVey) Dowling.

He retired as Associate Professor of the University of Connecticut's Department of Marine Science and the Department of Geology and Geophysics.

He was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Pawcatuck and was a member of the Alleluia Prayer Group.

Mr. Dowling leaves his wife of 45 years, Eleanor (Christen) Dowling; three sons, John Dowling of Rollinsford, NH, Matthew Dowling of Mystic, and Thomas Dowling of Belle Meade, NJ; three daughters, Mary Jane Kinman of Denville, NJ, Mary Elizabeth Forstmeier of Bellefonte, PA, and Mary Patricia Shippee of Doylestown, PA, and 11 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, James.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, historic downtown Mystic on Sunday from 5-7pm. A Funeral Mass will be concelebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Pawcatuck on Monday at 9am. Burial will be in St. Michael's New Cemetery. A reception will immediately follow the burial service at the family home in North Stonington.
