Kenneth N. MacKenzie, 92 died Thursday September 13th, he was the son of the late Norman E. and Elizabeth (MacPherson) MacKenzie.
He was born in Hanson and lived there all his life.
He was a star athlete in his younger years, playing baseball for 10 years for the Hanson Town Team in the Old Colony League and football for the Whitman Town Team during the same period. He was noted for his speed in both sports.
He sang for many years in the Congregational Church choir and with a male chorus and a local quartette.
He was appointed a Patrolman on the Hanson Police Department in 1939.
He served in the United States Army during WWII with a Military Police Unit.
Returning from the service in 1946, he was appointed Chief of Police in Hanson, and held that position for 25 years until his retirement in 1971. His many friends honored him in a testimonial in recognition of his many years of service to the community.
He was a Past President of the Plymouth County Police Chiefs Association, and was a 25 year member of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association and the Southeastern Massachusetts Police Chiefs Association.
After his retirement he worked part time as a Special investigator for the Probate Court and in 1975 he was appointed a Deputy Sheriff of Plymouth County and served as a Court Officer in Superior Court.
He was a member of Wampatuck Lodge AF&AM in Hanson for 50 years.
Since retiring he spent the winters in Palmetto, Florida. Suring the summer months he lived in Hanson and served many hours in volunteer service at the Plymouth County Hospital, with the physical therapy department, assisting patients.
He loved good music and enjoyed playing the organ as a hobby and while in Florida was frequently called on to play and sing at entertainments. He also sang and directed a singing group that went to nursing homes do the elderly to entertain them. He often remarked in his later years that the most rewarding part of his life was the volunteer services he performed after retiring.
In addition to his wife of 68 years, Esther (Jones) MacKenzie he is survived by two sons Robert a retired Warrant Court Officer in the United States Coast Guard of Weymouth, Richard and his wife Maureen of Hanson, two granddaughters Jamie MacKenzie-Edgerly of Whitman, and Linsey MacKenzie-Brown of Hanson, two great grandsons Brent and Cale Edgerly of Whitman.Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service to be held Tuesday September 18th at 11:00AM in the Fern Hill Cemetery, High Street, Hanson.
