Anthony Pina, 75, of New Bedford died Saturday September 1, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Mae (Mendes) Pina.
Born in Tisbury, the son of the late Edwin and Jenny (Rose) Perry, he was raised in Fairhaven and lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
He was a member of the International Church of the Nazarene.
Mr. Pina was formerly employed as a bus driver for SRTA until his retirement. He later worked for American Auction.
He was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, where he played football and basketball and ran track. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He had been a member of the Fairhaven Varsity Club football team and the United Social Club softball team. An avid golfer, he was a member of the 9-18 Golf Club and was the organizer of the annual Joseph Mendes Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the Kidney Foundation.
Survivors include his wife; four children, Michael Monteiro and his wife Melinda, Brenda Harrison and her husband Edmund, Steven Monteiro and his wife Linda, and Dena Pina, all of New Bedford; a sister, Nadine Conrad and her husband of Groton, CT; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 10 AM at the International Church of the Nazarene. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
