Cora L. Mayfield was the first born child to the divine union of the late Cecil Willie and Johnnie Espy Lacey. She was born on Friday, September 22, 1944 in Fayette, Alabama.
Cora attended the Lamar County School District until the age of thirteen. The family moved to Columbus, Georgia where her father was stationed at Fort Benning. It was in Columbus, Georgia where she eventually met and married L.D. Mayfield.
Cora accepted Christ as her personal savior early in life. She attended Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and served as a Matron. She was a member of the American Society of Military Comptrollers and the Regularettes Military Auxiliary.
She earned an undergraduate degree in Business Management with minors in accounting and logistics from Alabama A&M University. She began her diverse professional career in May 1968 with the Alaska Air Force Command. She retired from a civil service career that spanned over thirty-six years.
Cora believed in the holy word and trusted in God. She loved her family, had a passion for traveling, and spent her life in quest of happiness.
Her voyage from this earthly place on August 30, 2007 leaves an emptiness in the hearts of all who dearly loved her. She was preceded in death by her son Richard D. Mayfield. Cherishing her memory are a devoted husband, L.D. Mayfield, a sister, Trevae Rodriguez (Rumaldo), Fayette, AL; three sons: Larry D. Mayfield, Jr. (Michelle), Snellville, GA; Cecil D. Mayfield, Huntsville, AL; Gray D. Mayfield (Sharon), Augusta, GA; five loving grandchildren: Miquel Jones, Damar`e Crittendon, Trenton Mayfield, Larry D. Mayfield III, and Marsalis J. Mayfield, one great grandchild, Marquasia Jones; Several nieces, a nephew, and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
