Betty Avery Hewitt, age 82, of Lake Wales, FL, formerly of Old Mystic, passed away Monday evening at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital with her family at her side.
Mrs. Hewitt was born in New London on July 28, 1925 the daughter of Kenneth and Marion Avery.
She was married to George Wilcox Hewitt, a noted local historian and author, in Groton on June 6, 1944. Together, they enjoyed 52 years of marriage before his sudden death on June 21, 1996.
An avid crafter, Betty will be remembered for her jewelry making, sewing, knitting, and most of all, her love for her family. She was a longtime member of the Charity Chapter Order of Eastern Star where she held many chairs, including Past Worthy Matron.
She is survived by her children, Sandra L. Greene and her husband Richard of Mystic, Carl A. Hewitt and his wife Betty of Stonington; her twin sister Beth Erikson Bernhart of Lake Wales with whom she made her home for the past 11 years; a brother, Ralph Avery of FL; 4 grandchildren, Sharon Carreiro and her husband Ernesto, Richard Greene Jr. and his wife Jill, Michael Charnetski and his wife Dori, and Ginger Hewitt; great-grandchildren, Shana, Lyndsay and Monica Charnetski, and Julianna & Robbie Greene. She was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Avery.
Betty's family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday from 12noon-1:45pm, immediately followed by a Graveside Funeral Service at 2pm at Elm Grove Cemetery, Rte. 27, Mystic. The Rev. Dr. G. Kenneth Carpenter, Pastor of Union Baptist Church, will officiate.
