Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Roger T. Mattson, 55, of 341 Essex Avenue died on Thursday, August 23, 2007, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston.
Born in Gloucester on May 17, 1952, he was the son of Esther A. (Williams) Mattson and the late William Mattson. He was a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1970, where he was active in the R.O.T.C. In his youth, he played Little League baseball for the Indians.
Roger was employed as a bartender for ten years at Pratty’s and later for fifteen years at the Elks Club. He was also a longtime member of the Gloucester Lodge of Elks No. 892 and enjoyed playing cards there and socializing with his many friends.
Roger was extremely proud of his late father’s accomplishments as a World War II veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was member of the U.S. Army Air Corps, whose B-24 Liberator Bomber was shot down by the German’s in December of 1944. He had traveled nearly 1,100 miles on foot to freedom.
A great sports enthusiast, he was wonderful at sports trivia. He was a devoted son and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends and caregivers.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, John W. and Roseanna Mattson of Beverly, a niece, Gina Mattson, two nephews, Anthony and Michael Mattson and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning in the Seaside Cemetery, Lanesville at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Assoc., 330 Congress St., Boston, MA 02110.
