Obituary

James "Jim" Lowe Peacock, Jr., 92, a resident of Dothan, Alabama and Tifton, died Tuesday, November 1, 2005, at his residence in Dothan, Alabama after a lengthy illness. A prayer service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2005, at Byrd Funeral Home in Dothan, Alabama. Dr. Lawson Bryan and Rev. Wayne Helms will officiate. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 4, 2005, at Tifton's First United Methodist Church. Rev. Jerry Lillard and Rev. Wayne Helms will officaite with burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Stephen Rogers, Scott Madding, Robert Jolly, Jonathan McAllister, John Helms, Jeff Konz, Mark Raymond, Emiliano Corral and James Casey, who are grandchildren and nephews, will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Tifton Lions Club, the Tifton Investment Club and former employees of Atwater-Peacock Electric Company. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 4, 2005, from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the service at Tifton's First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Peacock was born on November 9, 1912 in Muscogee County and spent his early years in Columbus. He was the sons of James Lowe Peacock and Minerva Gordy Peacock, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Peacock Speight. A graduate of Columbus High School and Auburn University, he received an Electrical Engineering degree in 1934 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was married to Sara Claire Rogers of Speigner, Alabama on February 29, 1936 and was employed by Georgia Power Company in Columbus, transferring to Tifton in 1937.

In 1941, he was called to active duty in the United States Army and served in the United States and Europe throughout World War II. He was wounded in the D-Day invasion and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Bronze Arrow. After the war, he remained in the Army Reserve and retired as a Major. He was a member of the Military Officers Association and the American Legion. In 1946, Mr. Peacock established the Atwater-Peacock Electric Company in Tifton, along with Mr. Hull Atwater, and became the company's sole owner in 1972. He was a member of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers and a registered professional engineer. He was an active member of Tifton's First United Methodist Church, a member and teacher of the Nath Williams Sunday School Class. He served terms as Sunday School Superintendent and on the Adminstrative Board as well as two terms as chairman of the Board of Trustees. A member of the Tifton Lions Club since 1946, he served as president in 1956 and was active until recent years. He was also a member of the Spring Hill Country Club, Tifton Investment Club, Tifton Fishing Club and the Tifton Arts Council.

Mr. Peacock is survived by his wife, Sara Claire Rogers Peacock of Dothan, Alabama and Tifton; his children, Dr. James Lowe Peacock III and his wife, Florence, of Chapel Hill, South Carolina, Claire Peacock Helms and her husband, Rev. Wayne Helms, of Dothan, Alabama, Laurie Peacock Jordan and her husband, Zack W. Jordan of Apopka, Florida; grandchildren, Dr. Louly Peacock Konz and her husband, Dr. Jeff Konz, Dr. Claire Peacock Raymond and her husband, Dr. Mark Raymond, Natalie Peacock Corral and her husband, Emiliano, Catherine Helms Casey and her husband, James, John Robert Helms and his wife, Rachel Cole Helms, Marguerite Lowe Jordan, Sara Caroline Jordan and Rebecca Lauren Jordan; great grandchildren, Nicholas Clayton Konz, Flora Rochelle Konz, Yannis Mark Raymond, Michael Ander Connell, Christopher Jair Connell, Zach Casey, Von Casey, Annabelle Pearl Helms; one sister, Dorothy Peacock Madding of Albany; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the care of Mr. Peacock by the Dothan Southern Clinic staff, the Terrace at Grove Park and the Wiregrass Hospice.
