Obituary

SALEM - Raymond Z. Sobocinski, 88, husband of Genevieve (Radzinski) Sobocinski, of Salem, died Monday, August 20, 2007 at the Salem Hospital after being stricken at his home.

Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Constantine Aniela (Zawacka) Sobocinski. A lifelong resident of the city, he attended St. John The Baptist grammar school and was a graduate of Salem High School and Hathorne Institute.

A Navy veteran of WWII, he served as Navy Chief of Disbursements in the Panama Canal zone and attained the rating of Chief Petty Officer.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 38 years by GTE Sylvania, working in Salem and Danvers. He retired from the Endicott Street, Danvers plant as supervisor of distribution services and was a member of the Sylvania Quarter Century Club.

A lifelong member of the St. John The Baptist Church, Salem, he was active as a Eucharistic Minister, alter server and usher, and was a member of the Holy Name Society, past president of the Boosters Club, served on the bingo committee for 30 years, and was a member of the school building committee. He was a member of the Polish American Citizens Club, The Polish Legion of American Veterans, Post 55, Salem, and the AARP.

Besides his wife, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Richard & Louise Sobocinski of Chesapeake, VA, two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol & Richard Hurst of Westford, Barbara Sobocinski & Michael Hawkins of St. Petersburg, FL, 4 grandchildren, Kathryn Sobocinski and her husband Mark Nelson of Port Townsend, WA, Matthew Sobocinski of Arlington, VA, Nathaniel Husrt and Christopher Hurst, both of Westford, one sister, Geraldine Agocs of Hamilton and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Irene Richardson.

His funeral service will be held Thursday, August 23, 2007 at 9 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 am at St. John The Baptist Church, Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Wednesday, 4 to 8 pm. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery, Salem.
