Obituary


MIDDLEBORO — William H. Harrop III, age 75 years, of Oak Point in Middleboro and for most of his life a resident of Dartmouth, died Friday, August 17, 2007, at home. He was the husband of Jane (Shearer) Harrop.

A graduate of Lenox School and Bryant College, he was President of the former Park Oil Company in New Bedford and a consultant with Don Adams Oil Company.

During the Korean Conflict he served in the U.S. Army.

Bill was active in the community with memberships in the Wamsutta Club, New Bedford Yacht Club, Fairhaven and New Bedford Rotary Clubs, the New England Fuel Institute and former President of the Home Heating Council of Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. He was also a trustee of the New Bedford Industrial Foundation, and in Dartmouth formerly active as a Town Meeting Member, the Charter Commission, the Personnel Board, the Appeals Board, served as assistant Director of Civil Defense, the Board of Directors of the YMCA and vestry of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, William H. Harrop IV of Walpole; his daughter, Cornelia (Nina) Middleton of Mattapoisett; and four grandchildren, Cency Middleton, Will, Jenna and Delaney Harrop, and his aunt Anne Shepherd.

His memorial service will take place on Tuesday August 21 at 11 A.M. in St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in Marion. Visitation Monday at the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford from 5-8 P.M. Remembrances may be made in his name to Mass. General Hospital, Development Office, 165 Cambridge St., Boston, MA. 02114. His burial is private.
