Obituary

Everett E. “Bud” Holmes, 89 of Sandown, NH died August 17, 2007 in the Pleasant Valley Nursing Home, Derry, NH. He was born in Braintree, MA on April 10, 1918 the son of the late John and Maude (Francis) Holmes. For health reasons, the family later moved to New Hampshire where Bud worked with the Boy Scouts, Little League, Grange and Fire Department. During WWII he served in the US Army as a Tank Commander of flame throwing tanks in Okinawa and was severely wounded when hit by a mortar shell. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Medal of Appreciation from the Chinese Government. While living in Sandown, Bud served on the first Planning Board of Sandown, worked as Road Agent for 14 years and was owner of the construction company now known as Holmes & Bassett Construction. In addition to his 74 year membership in the Grange, he was a member of the Lorraine Post of the VFW, the 713th Flame Throwing Tank Battalion and the 11th Armored Division.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth (Poore) Holmes of Sandown, one daughter, Arlene Bassett and her husband Carroll of Sandown, one son, Charles Holmes and his wife Mildred of Raymond, NH, five grandchildren, James and Scott Bassett, Stacey Gilcreast and Kathleen Winter all of Sandown, and Lisa Ullah of Manchester, NH, six great grandchildren, also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Terry Holmes and by his brother, John Holmes.
In accordance with Bud’s wishes there will be no calling hours. Following cremation, committal services will be held in Center Cemetery, Sandown at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, NH Affiliate, PO Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160.
