Obituary

Helen A. (Dullea) McCarthy, 89, of Medford passed away on August 14th 2007. She was born on July 26th, 1918 in Boston and was raised in Roxbury. She is a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School in Roxbury, attended Boston State College and later graduated with honors from Salem State College at age 51 earning a degree in Early Childhood Education. She spent several years teaching at Oakland Park Nursery School in Medford. After her retirement Helen worked for Mystic Valley Elder Services providing respite care. During her early adult years she also worked as a Shop Steward for the Lewis Candy Company. She was a devout parishioner at the former St. James Parish in Medford where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Damien Guild. She is a former Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troop leader in Medford. She is the beloved wife of the late Timothy F. McCarthy; the daughter of the late State Representative Ernest W. Dullea and Catherine (McDonough) Dullea; the mother of Carol A. McCarthy and her husband Chris Stribakos of Everett, William E. McCarthy and his wife Jane of Okemos, Mich., Kevin F. McCarthy and his wife Karen of Malden, Timothy P. McCarthy of Winthrop, Maureen K. Nardone and her husband John of Medford, John J. McCarthy of Medford, Brian C. McCarthy of Saugus and his fiancée Angelina Tamzen and Michael McCarthy and his wife Kellie of Kenneth City, FL; the grandmother of Meghan McCarthy, Molly McCarthy, Corinne Chadwell, Patrick McCarthy, Domenic Vigliotte , Gina Nardone, Joseph Nardone , Christopher McCarthy, Kelly McCarthy, Ryan McCarthy, Colleen McCarthy and Krystal Perreira and the great grandmother of Abigail, Alyssa and Domenic Vigliotte Jr. She is also the sister of Kay Day of Del Ray Beach, FL and Orr’s Island, ME and the late Dorothy Rodrick, Virginia Crocker, Frank Dullea, Ernest Dullea and Margaret Murphy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St., Malden on Saturday August 18th at 9 AM followed by interment in Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Relatives & friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Friends of the Medford Public Library, c/o Brian Boutilier, 111 High St., Medford, MA 02155.
