Obituary

STEVEN D. CARLSON, 58, Chief of the Hingham Police Department since 2000, died on Friday, July 27th at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth after a brief illness. Chief Carlson was born in Boston and lived in Hingham for most of his life, graduating from the public schools. He was a First Lieutenant, Bronze Star recipient and platoon leader in the Army during the Vietnam War. He began his career with the Hingham Police Department in 1975 and 'came up through the ranks'. He was promoted to captain in 1996 and 4 years later became chief.
Chief Carlson was active in numerous professional and civic organizations, including;the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, the Mass. Chiefs of Police Association Traffic Records Coordinating Committee, was a Past President of the Advisory Board of the Southeastern Mass. Chiefs of Police Association, Past President of the Plymouth County Chiefs of Police Association, the New England Chiefs of Police Association, the Massachusetts Crime Prevention Officers Association, the FBI Law Enforcement Educational Development Association, the Regional Electric & Computer Crime Task Force (REACCT), was Chairman of the Town of Hingham Traffic Committee, Chairman of the Hingham Police Department 100th Anniversary Committee, a member of the New England Community Police Crime Prevention Partnership, served on the Board of Directors of the Hingham/Hull Rotary Club, was a member of Old Colony Masonic Lodge of Hingham and was involved with the White Ribbon Campaigns at Hingham High School.
He leaves his wife Sandra L. (Dailey) Carlson and two sons; Craig S. Carlson of Germany and Marc D. Carlson of Canton, Michigan. He was the brother of Judith C. Whitman of Stratford, CT., Roy E. Carlson of Weymouth, Nancy L. Stidstone of Middleboro, Gary N. Carlson of Hanover, Virginia M. Kelly of Hingham and Janet G. Asnes of Norwell. Also survived by two grandchildren; Steffen and Brygid Carlson and his mother-in-law, Josephine (Lombardo) Dailey. He was the son of the late Roy N. and the late Ellen A. (Bellew) Carlson.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Aug. 1st at 10 AM at St. Paul's Church, 147 North St., Hingham Square.
Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Tuesday from 3-8 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Jimmy Fund-Dana Farber, Inc., 375 Longwood Ave., Boston, MA 02115 or to the CC Unit / Health & Education Department of South Shore Hospital, 55 Fogg Rd., Weymouth, MA 02190.
The interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Hingham.
