Obituary

Funeral services will be held on Sunday for Samuel W. Gorenstein, 92, of Medford & formerly of Chelsea & Everett. Mr. Gorenstein entered into eternal rest surrounded by his loving family on July 19, 2007 at the Leahy Clinic in Burlington. He was the husband of 59 years to Phyllis (Tarlin) Gorenstein of Medford.

Born in Chelsea on September 26, 1914, he was the son of the late Meyer & Fannie Tessie Gorenstein. He was raised in Chelsea & attended the Chelsea Public Schools graduating from Chelsea High School in 1933. Sam was drafted into the United States Army on September 10, 1941 at Boston, MA & served with the 5th Division of General George Patton’s 3rd Army throughout the European Theater. His military occupation was as a Fire Control Instrument Operator. He earned the Sharpshooter-Carbine qualification & fought in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, & Central Europe. Sam was honorably discharged on October 12, 1945 at Ft. Devens, MA & received the American Defense Service Medal & the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. After returning from military service, Sam became the partner & owner of the Industrial Wiper Supply Company in Chelsea. He was a longtime member of Temple Shalom in Medford, was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, & the Society of the 5th Division.

In addition to his wife, Sam is survived by his children, Marc Gorenstein & his wife Marian of Needham, Nathan Gorenstein of Wilmington, DE, & Jonina Schonfeld & her husband Jonathan of Lexington; & his grandchildren, Avishai Geller, Seth Gorenstein, Aaron Gorenstein, Gabe Schonfeld, & Noah Schonfeld. He was predeceased by his brother Saul Gorenstein and by his twin brother Max Gorenstein. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 22, 2007 in Temple Shalom, 475 Winthrop St. Medford at 12:00 Noon. Rabbi Braham David will officiate. Burial will follow in the Chevra Mishna of Chelsea Cemetery, Lynn. Memorial observance will be held at his late residence immediately following the burial on Sunday, on Mon from 2-4 & 5-7PM, on Tues through Thursday from 2-4 & 6:30-8:30 PM, & on Friday from 2-4 PM only.
