Thomas V. “Red” Smith

...retired from Sullivan Bros.; 81

TEWKSBURY - Thomas V. “Red” Smith, 81, a well known devoted Catholic layman, diedFriday afternoon, Dec. 6, at Saint's Memorial Medical Center in Lowell after a brief illness. Hewas the husband of the late Alice G. (Chandler) Smith, who died in 1962.

He was born in Lowell, November 16, 1921, a son of the late Phillip and Anna (Gillick) Smith. He was raised in Lowell and graduated Keith Academy. He had lived in Tewksbury since 1960.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, and served in France.

He was employed by Sullivan Bros. printing company in Lowell for more than 46 years. He was amember of the International Brotherhood of Bookbinders, Local 139, and had served as bothShop Steward and Vice-President of Local 139.

In his earlier years, he was active in Little League in Tewksbury, and had served as President ofthe organization. Since retirement, he was active as a monitor at the Trahan and Dewingelementary schools. He also attended the daily 9:00 a.m. Mass at Saint William's Church.

He is survived by two sons; Thomas J. Smith and his dear friend Anne Hiort both of Tewksburyand Brian and his wife Janice (Bagnulo) Smith of Dracut, two daughters, Mary Ann and herhusband William Cliff Jr. of Tewksbury and Susan and her husband Frank Zottoli of Tewksbury,four adoring grandchildren, Nicole and Brian Smith and Alice and Anthony Zottoli, two brothers,Patrick Smith of Methuen, John Smith of Chelmsford, two sisters, Mary Curry of Chelmsford andAnn Glasheen of Lowell. He is also survived by three special children, Deirdre, Fallon and Richard Hiort of Tewksbury.

He was also brother of the late James Smith, Archbishop Phillip Smith O.M.I., Rev. Fr. JosephSmith, M.M., Kevin Smith, William Smith and Brenden Smith.

His funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Dec. 10, in St. William's Church. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery,Lowell.
