Funeral Service in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Thursday at 11am with visitation 10-11am. Burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 1:15pm. Charlotte L. Desmond, 71 years died Saturday at South Shore Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was the wife for 18 years of the late Bruce A. Desmond. She was born and raised in Giatto, West Virginia, the daughter of the late J. Edward and Vivian L. (Davis) Washington. She had lived in Brockton for the past 20 years and previously lived in Dorchester. She had attended Bluefield State College in Bluefield West Virginia and completed her nursing education at the trade school for girls at Boston City Hospital in 1968. Mrs. Desmond had been an LPN at Boston State Hospital, several nursing homes in the Boston and Brockton area and retired from the Brockton Area Multi Service Center. She had been a member and actively involved in he improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World-Juanita Temple in Dorchester. Within the Elks she was a purple cross nurse, a Jolly Jumper for fund raising and past state president of the New England State Organization, past daughter ruler of Juanita Temple. She was a Past member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Dorchester. She loved to sew and crochet, cats and dogs. She was everyone’s friend and the first to help someone in need with a smile. She was a caring mother not only to her children but the whole neighborhood. When living in Boston she was a member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church.
She is survived by her two sons, Russell K. Desmond of Dorchester and Darrell L. Desmond of Sacramento, CA, a granddaughter, LaToya R. Garnes of Boston, a sister, Janice I. Thompson of Sacramento, CA and three brothers, Thomas W. Washington of Linden, NJ, James R. and Duane B. Washington both of Brockton and many nieces and nephews.
