Joseph T. Mendes, 86, of Dartmouth died Monday July 9, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Rena (Regis) Mendes.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joseph and Maria (Pedro) Mendes, he lived in Dartmouth for most of his life.
He was a communicant of St. George Church in Westport, where he was active in the St. Vincent dePaul Society.
Mr. Mendes was formerly employed as a driver/salesman for Giusti Baking Company and later worked at Hawthorne Country Club.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines.
An avid golfer, he was a member of the Hawthorne Country Club. He was a member of the Dartmouth Housing Authority for many years, and served as a board member for N.A.H.R.O. He had been a member of the Dartmouth Fire Department District 3. He was awarded the Marian Medal from the Diocese of Fall River in 1996.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Joanne Mendes of Canton; a sister, Marie Oliver of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Edmund Sylvia and John Silva.
His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10 AM at St. George Church, Westport. Visiting hours are omitted. Private burial will be at the Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne.
