Obituary

Helen (Atkins) Richmond, of Winchester, passed away at the Winchester Nursing Center on July 3 at age 103. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Harry W. and Jane Stewart Cumming Atkins. She spent the better part of her life in Boston, graduating from Milton High School. She also attended Boston University and graduated from Chandler, a highly regarded school for development of business skills. She met her husband, Carl Gee Richmond, while employed as secretary to the Vice President of the Arkwright Insurance Company in Boston. They married in 1926 and had three sons. Helen traveled with and resided in various places as a result of her husband’s career advancements in the insurance industry before World War II. During the war, the family lived five miles northwest of Washington, where their third son, Charles, was born at the Army’s Walter Reed General Hospital in 1943. After her husband’s retirement from the U.S. Army as a distinguished Colonel, Corps of Engineers, they left Washington for Winchester, to be close to Carl’s family. They raised their children in Winchester and were involved in many community organizations. Helen was an active member of the First Congregational Church and the En Ka Society, Winchester’s oldest women’s service organization. While volunteering and tending to her husband and children left little time for hobbies, she enjoyed her doll collection, which she began as a child. Helen also took pleasure in spending time with family. She played hostess to many family visits and holiday dinners. During summers, they could be found at their ocean edge cottages in Rockport, MA and Searsport, ME. They also traveled to Banff and Lake Louise in Canada and well as a Caribbean cruise on the SS Bremen. After many happy years together, Helen became a widow in 1966. She leaves behind her sons: Richard A. of Winchester, John Q. of Camarillo, CA and Charles S. Richmond of New Hartford, CT. She was the sister of the late Harry W. Atkins and is also survived by 5 grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to the En Ka Society, 1037 Main St., Winchester MA 01890
