Jean Babcock Chappell, 95, died Thursday, July 5, at Beechwood in New London. She was the widow of the late Thomas Huntington Chappell, and Episcopal priest. She lived for many years on Heath Street in Mystic, prior to moving to Academy Point.
Jean was born on October 11, 1911 in Plainfield, NJ the daughter of George L. and Ruth Stillman Babcock. She was a graduate of Smith College.
She married Huntington Chappell on September 14, 1935. She is survived by three daughters, Jean S. Chappell of Norwalk, CT, Alexandra C. Cole of Santa Barbara, CA, and Ann C. Nyhan of Oro Valley, AZ. She is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and her brother, George H. Babcock.
For many years Jean volunteered in the library at the Mystic Seaport Museum and with Red Cross Bloodmobiles. She was an active member of St. Mark’s Church in Mystic. An avid weaver, she was a member of the Connecticut Handweavers Guild.
A Memorial service will be conducted at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic on Wednesday, July 25th at 11am. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Mark’s Church or Beechwood Nursing Center, 31 Vauxhall Street, New London CT 06320. The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic is assisting the family.
