Obituary

James Matthew Cain, Jr., of Marion, MA and The Villages, FL, an educator in New England and New York for 37 years died Friday, November 29th, 2002 of congestive heart failure at the Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, FL. He was 75.

James, known as "Jim", was born and raised in Belmont Massachusetts, the son of James M. Cain and Kathryn L. (Ryan) Cain. He was enlisted in the Navy Air Corps from 1945 to 1949. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree in Economics and his Master's Degree in Education from Tufts University.

His career in education began as a teacher in Connecticut, and continued in 1953 as a principal in Brewster, Massachusetts where, to this day, he is still remembered by his students. He was a principal in Duxbury, Massachusetts for many years. In 1968, he moved to Manhasset, New York to become the principal of Shelter Rock School, where he stayed for five years. During that time he integrated the school under court order, something that he is well-remembered for in that community. He returned to Massachusetts in 1973 and spent the next 15 years as a principal in Needham, Massachusetts.

He loved the town of Marion and, while he was working, served as a member of the Finance Committee. When he retired his interest in education continued and he was elected to the Marion School Board, and was a member and Chairman for 6 years. He was an avid sailor and member of the Beverly Yacht Club in Marion.

He was, above all, devoted to his family. He and his wife, Rita Gwendolyn (McGuinness) Cain were lucky enough to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on July 26th of this year. He also leaves his children: James M. Cain, III of Boston, Carol Cain Farrington of Marion and Naples, Florida, Richard Cain of Berlin, Massachusetts, Kathryn Meighan of Weston, Connecticut, and Leslie Macina of Marion; his brother, Edward Cain of Massachusetts, and 10 grandchildren.
