Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Vera L. (Cederstrom) Cheves, 98, of Lanesville, died at her residence early Sunday evening, June 24, 2007. She was the wife of the late Robert W. Cheves, who died in 1975.
Born in Rockport on November 13, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Andrew G. and Olga A. (Silen) Cederstrom. After graduating Gloucester High School in 1926, she attended Worcester State Normal School and then received her B.A. from Boston University. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Simmons College.
Mrs. Cheves was employed as a librarian for twenty-five years for the Boston Public Library, having retired in 1973. She had also worked for eight years at the Addison Gilbert Hospital as a librarian, retiring in 1992. She was also an active volunteer and Friend of the Sawyer Free Library.
She was a longtime member of the Orthodox Congregational Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Ladies Aid Society. She was also their organist for twenty-two years.
She is survived by her daughter, Constance M. A. Mitchell, her daughter-in-law, Barbara (Hooper) Cheves of Sun City, CA, her granddaughters, Kimberly D. Paul of Concord, NH, Leslie E., wife of Gilbert Martinez of Temecula, CA, grandsons, Robert N., husband of Nancy Cheves of CA, Thomas R. Mitchell, Jr. of Concord, NH, two great-grandchildren, Melissa A. and Anthony R. Martinez of Temecula, CA and a nephew, Albert G. Cederstrom of Berwyn, PA. She was also predeceased by her son, Robert D. Cheves, her son-in-law, Thomas R. Mitchell and two brothers, Albert G. and Philip A. Cederstrom.
Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday morning in the Seaside Cemetery at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no public visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Orthodox Congregational Church “Organ Fund”, 1120 Washington St., Gloucester, MA, Friends of the Sawyer Free Library, 2 Dale Ave., Gloucester, MA 01930 or V.N.A.
