Douglas Paul Goold, 83
Retired Norton Postmaster

Douglas Paul Goold, 83, of Norton died on Sunday June 24, 2007 at Canterbury Woods in Attleboro, MA. He was the beloved husband of the late Ruth A. (Cathcart) Goold who passed away on January 29, 1993.
Born in Norton, MA on March 8, 1924 he was a dear son of the late Douglas J. and Eleanor S. (Hopper) Goold.
He grew up in Norton and was educated in Norton schools. He was a 1941 graduate of Norton High School. He attended Boston University for 2 years before answering the call of his country to serve in the United States Army during WWII. He served from 1943-1946 and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. While serving in the Army he was stationed in the Philippine’s. Upon being discharged he returned to Boston University to continue his studies and graduate. He majored in business administration.
After college Mr. Goold began work at the Norton Post Office. He worked there for many years and retired as Postmaster.
Active in veteran’s affairs Paul was a member and past commander of both the Filmore-Nason VFW post 8049 and the Lieutenant Harold A. Healy American Legion Post 222 both in Norton. He faithfully marched with his fellow veteran’s in Norton parades and in 2001 was honored as the Grand Marshall for the Memorial Day Parade.
Mr. Goold was a member of the Unitarian Congregational Church in Norton. He was a former town selectman and was a member and volunteer at the Norton Historical Society.
Following his retirement he enjoyed playing golf. He was also an avid stamp and coin collector. Mr. Goold had made his home in Norton for most of his life.
He is survived by his devoted sons; Stephen P. Goold of Norton and David R. Goold and his wife Sheri of Foxboro. His dear sister Ruth E. Goold of Norton. Also survived by his cherished grandchildren; Cassandra L. Goold of Plainville, Brandon P. Goold of Foxboro and Briana N. Goold of Foxboro and his dear friend Carol Day of Norton.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Thursday June 28th at 10:00 A.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton. Burial will follow in the Norton Common Cemetery, Norton.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday June 27th from 5-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers those wishing may remember Mr Goold with a donation in his memory to The Alzheimer’s Association Massachusetts Chapter 311 Arsenal St. Watertown, MA 02472 in the name of Canterbury Woods.
