Joan E. (Mare) Whitney passed away on June 19th, 2007 surrounded by her husband and family.
She was born in New York on May 15, 1935 the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen Mare. She married Gerald Kennedy in 1957 and they were married for 20 years before his death. She leaves behind her husband of 23 years Allen F. Whitney whom she married in 1984,
Joan was a dedicated homemaker who not only raised her own children, but helped care for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also worked at the Navy Exchange for many years. Every week, she had fun bowling with her teammates at the Holiday Bowl in Groton. She also enjoyed camping, gardening, shopping, and most of all, she enjoyed her family and friends, never missing an oppurtunity to give or lend a helping hand.
She is also survived by her daughter, Kim & husband Thomas Staigers of Ledyard, her son, Glen Kennedy of Plainfield, 3 stepchildren, Linda Martin of ND., Lorna Whitney of New London, Andrea Castleberry of Waterford; grandchildren, Thomas & Allen Staigers, Zachary Johnson, Victoria & Jarred Kennedy, Peggy Fournier, Heather Walker, Damien, Megan and Billy Castleberry; greatgrandchildren, Lilliana DeJesus and Casey Castleberry; her siblings, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Garry Kenendy.
Joan's family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Sunday from 3-5pm. A Funeral Service will be conducted at St. David's Episcopal Church, Rte. 12, Gales Ferry on Monday at 2pm with burial following at Avery-Stoddard Cemetery.
