Worcester__Sophie R. "Rita" (Jakubowicz) Gurnick, 88, of 14 Burton Court died November 24 in Saint Francis Home, 101 Plantation St.
She was the wife of former Worcester Firefighter Joseph C. Gurnick who died in 1954.
Mrs. Gurnick is survived by a son Joseph P. Gurnick of Key Largo, Florida, a daughter June C. Shields of Auburn; a sister, Lucy wife of Edward Michalak of Shrewsbury; a brother, Alphonse Jakubowicz of Phoenix Arizona; and a sister-in-law Florence Jakubowicz of Worcester; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Joseph and Frank Jakubowicz and a sister, Helen Hebb predeceased her. She was born in Laconia, New Hampshire a daughter of Paul and Stephanie (Zdanowicz) Jakubowicz and lived here for most of her life.
Mrs. Gurnick worked for many years at The Kimball Hall dining room at the College of The Holy Cross, retiring in 1979.She was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church. She was an avid baker and decorator of cakes. She also enjoyed knitting afghans.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday November 27th from The Henry-Dirsa Funeral Home 33 Ward St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church 34 Ward St. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday November 26th.
